A photographer’s perspective on Nationalmuseum

My name is Karin Lundin and I am a wedding photographer based in Stockholm. I have photographed weddings at Nationalmuseum. The Entrance Hall is one of the most striking rooms I have ever worked in – the double-height ceiling, marble floors, and art on the walls create a backdrop that feels like a film set. I always make sure to capture guests’ reactions as they walk in.

The Sculpture Hall gives dinner photographs unlike anything else – the sculptures create depth and shadow in the images. My tip: use the grand staircase for portraits. The light falls diagonally from the windows and creates a natural drama that is hard to find anywhere else in Stockholm.

Dreaming of an unforgettable event in one of Sweden’s most iconic cultural buildings? The Nationalmuseum offers private opportunities to host elegant dinners, corporate events and even weddings in its magnificent halls. With its combination of history, art and sophisticated design, the museum is a place where every occasion becomes something extraordinary.

Want to capture the day on film as well? I often work alongside Nordvér Films, who create cinematic wedding films with the same feeling for light and moments.

An oasis of culture & inspiration

The Nationalmuseum is more than an art museum, it is a place for inspiration, creativity and reflection. With its world-leading collections, distinctive surroundings and constant commitment to preserving and presenting cultural heritage, the museum is a treasure for anyone who wants to experience the power of art. Whether you are an art connoisseur, a curious visitor or looking for a magnificent place for a special occasion, the Nationalmuseum offers an experience beyond the ordinary.

A wedding at the Nationalmuseum, a unique setting for your day

Celebrating your wedding at the Nationalmuseum gives the day an elegant and considered frame. The museum’s spaces combine historic architecture with a modern, open atmosphere where every part of the celebration finds its own place. With a carefully chosen menu, remarkable surroundings and a connection to art and culture, the Nationalmuseum becomes a place where every moment feels special.

Ceremony in the Sculpture Courtyard

The Sculpture Courtyard is one of the Nationalmuseum’s most appreciated places for ceremonies, where art and architecture create a unique and atmospheric setting. With its historic sculptures and beautiful courtyard, the ceremony is given an aesthetically rich frame, while the open space brings a sense of room to breathe and a closeness to nature. The stone walkways and artistic details provide a timeless backdrop for the ceremony, where every photograph captures a piece of the museum’s history.

Because the Sculpture Courtyard is part of the museum’s public spaces, you have access from 5:30 pm, which means the ceremony usually takes place around 6:00 pm. This gives a natural rhythm to the evening, where guests can arrive at their own pace, mingle for a while and then gather to witness your vows in this remarkable setting.

Preparations in the Beijer Room

The couple needs a calm and private space during the wedding day, and the Beijer Room is an ideal solution. This beautiful room, available from 3:00 pm, offers a private setting where you can change, finalise the last details and store your personal belongings.

The refined interior and considered layout make the room feel both practical and private. Here you can gather before the ceremony, take a pause from the events of the day and focus on each other before meeting your guests. The Beijer Room can also serve as a place to retreat to during the evening if you need a moment of calm in the middle of the celebration.

Group photo in the Stair Hall

One of the most iconic places in the Nationalmuseum is the Stair Hall, and this is where many couples choose to take the large group photograph. With its high vaults, impressive staircase and beautiful natural light, this space creates a natural stage for a photograph where the entire wedding party can gather.

The architectural design gives the photographs a classic and timeless quality. The width of the steps allows larger groups to arrange themselves on different levels, creating a dynamic and balanced composition. After the ceremony it is easy to gather your guests here before dinner begins, which makes the Stair Hall a practical and natural place for this important moment of the day.

Welcome drinks in the Entrance Hall

After the ceremony it is time to celebrate and welcome your guests to the evening. The Entrance Hall is the perfect place for drinks and canapés, where the airy atmosphere and clean architecture create an inviting setting.

Here your guests can mingle with a glass of champagne and enjoy carefully chosen canapés while you take a moment to breathe after the ceremony. The high ceilings and beautiful details of the hall add a sense of elegance and occasion. At the same time, the open layout creates a natural transition into the rest of the evening, with guests moving smoothly toward the dining room.

Wedding dinner in the restaurant

The main attraction of the evening is the wedding dinner, and Restaurang Nationalmuseum offers a combination of outstanding food and a refined setting. The restaurant is run by Fredrik Eriksson, one of Sweden’s most respected chefs, known for creating flavourful dishes built on Swedish ingredients and traditions. His philosophy is rooted in simplicity, quality and a harmonious balance between classic and modern flavours.

The bright dining room is elegantly furnished with design pieces and lighting from some of Sweden’s leading designers. Here you and your guests can enjoy a meal where every detail is carefully considered, from starter to dessert. The view over Strömmen heightens the experience and adds another dimension of presence and exclusivity to the dinner.

The menu is built around the best produce of the season and can be tailored to your wishes. Whether you want a classic three-course dinner or a more modern tasting style with several smaller dishes, the kitchen can deliver a culinary experience that makes your wedding dinner memorable.

An alternative: dinner in the South Light Court

For smaller parties, the South Light Court can be an excellent alternative to the restaurant. This bright and open space creates a more intimate dinner experience where guests sit gathered in a calm and private setting.

The room’s tall windows let in soft, natural light that creates a warm atmosphere during dinner. The ability to adapt the seating and decor lets you create a personal and welcoming feeling. For couples who want a smaller and more private celebration, this is an ideal place to hold your wedding.

A place of art, history and care

A wedding at the Nationalmuseum offers a well-organised setting where every part of the day finds its natural place. Here you can enjoy a beautiful and considered ceremony in the Sculpture Courtyard, take memorable photographs in the Stair Hall, raise a glass in the Entrance Hall and end the evening with a first-class dinner in the museum’s restaurant or light court.

With an experienced chef, refined spaces and a unique connection to art and history, this becomes a wedding experience that you and your guests will remember for a long time. The Nationalmuseum is a place where architecture, gastronomy and aesthetics meet, a beautiful backdrop for celebrating love on your own terms.

Wedding photographer: Nationalmuseum

Timeless wedding photographs in one of Sweden’s most beautiful buildings

I do not believe in making pictures that are only beautiful. I want them to mean something. To last.

A wedding is a day full of moments that never come again, a glance over a shoulder, a nervous movement of hands, a stillness just before the music begins. Those are the moments I look for. Not the staged or the perfect, but the felt.

I am Karin Lundin, and I have been photographing weddings for over ten years. My background in commercial photography and retouching gave me a sharp eye for light and detail, but it was only when I started photographing weddings that I really found what I wanted to do. I am not interested in creating a surface, I want the pictures to capture a reality. A document of your day, exactly as it was.

My style is cinematic and documentary, with an eye for the historical in weddings. I am inspired by the light, the architecture, the small gestures. I move through the day without directing, but I make sure the moments land in the right context. A welcoming gesture in the Entrance Hall, a smile caught in the mirror in the Beijer Room, the last deep breath before you walk out into the Sculpture Courtyard.

When I photograph, I am not thinking about what looks best in the moment, I am thinking about how it will feel in twenty years.

If you are looking for someone who blends in, who sees the quiet moments and creates pictures that outlast trends, I think we might be a good match.

Key takeaways

  • Start with guest count and weekend format. That decides which part of the venue suits you.
  • Photographer and venue usually book at the same time, 12 to 18 months before peak summer.
  • Own-drinks and catering policy vary by venue. Clear this up early in the quote process.
  • A rain plan for outdoor ceremonies is almost always necessary in Nordic weather.
  • Choose a photographer who has worked at the venue before. The difference shows in the gallery.
