Wedding at Norrvikens trädgårdar: a photographer guide

A wedding at Norrvikens trädgårdar in Båstad brings the ceremony, dinner and portraits together in a park with seven period gardens, with the ceremony above Laholmsbukten bay and dinner in Orangeriet for up to 200 guests. Norrviken is booked through set packages, and the prices for 2026 and 2027 are published in the price list of the venue. That makes it easy to budget for compared with many other wedding venues in Sweden.

The gardens are the life work of Rudolf Abelin. Born in 1864, Abelin was a gardener and pomologist who first created a garden by Bråviken, an inlet north of Norrköping. He had to leave it when the Nyköping railway was routed straight through it, and in 1905 he found the farm Lilla Båstad. From 1906 he built Villa Abelin for his family and began laying out the park, which opened to visitors on 15 May 1920. He kept planting until his death in 1961. The story is told by Norrviken and by Visit Båstad.

Abelin wanted to reflect the world in one garden. Today Norrviken has seven period gardens: the Renaissance Garden, the Baroque Garden, the Japanese Garden, the Water Garden, the Romantic Garden, the North German Garden and the Oriental Terrace. On top of those come the Cherry Garden, the kitchen garden and Tor Park. For a wedding that means many different settings within walking distance, and further down I go through how they work in photographs.

Norrviken lies in northwest Skåne, so for guests from Stockholm or abroad it is a journey. How much does a wedding at Norrvikens trädgårdar cost?

Norrviken has three wedding packages: Iris, Dahlia and Lilja. Package prices are the same in 2026 and 2027 and all prices include VAT, according to the Norrviken price list for 2026 and 2027. High season runs from May to September and low season from October to April. Iris cannot be booked on Fridays, Saturdays, public holidays or bridge days in high season.

The ceremony venue comes on top of the package. A ceremony in the garden costs SEK 17,000 in 2026 and SEK 20,000 in 2027. A ceremony in Victoriahuset costs SEK 35,000 in 2026 and SEK 38,000 in 2027 from May to September, and SEK 25,000 in 2026 and SEK 28,000 in 2027 from October to April. The arrangement fee is SEK 13,000 in 2026 and SEK 15,000 in 2027. A suite costs SEK 6,000 per night in 2026 and SEK 6,800 in 2027, and a dressing room from SEK 4,500 in 2026 and from SEK 6,000 in 2027, depending on the number of guests.

A worked example for 2026: 60 guests on a Thursday in June with Iris comes to SEK 125,700 for the package. With a garden ceremony and the arrangement fee the total is SEK 155,700, before bar, flowers, music and other suppliers. No package includes a bar, but Norrviken will put together a solution on request. Norrviken reserves the right to change prices, so ask for the current price list before you book.

Every package includes dinner in Orangeriet with standard furnishings, white linen tablecloths, linen napkins, glassware, china, cutlery and serving staff. The packages also include a photography permit for the whole park and free admission to the gardens on the wedding day.

Where do the ceremony and dinner take place?

Norrviken offers two ceremony venues, according to the Norrviken wedding page. Österländska terrassen, the Oriental Terrace, looks out over Laholmsbukten bay. A small temple stands there that was once the playhouse of the Abelin daughters, surrounded by thyme beds and mosaic ponds, and it seats up to 180 guests. Ceremonies in the park can start at 16.30 at the earliest. Norrviken staff set out the furniture, prepare the space and clear it afterwards, and there is power for musicians. You book your own officiant or priest.

Victoriahuset, the Victoria House, is a large glass house in the middle of the park, with seating for up to 120 guests. The price includes basic seasonal decoration made by the Norrviken decorators. That makes Victoriahuset the ceremony venue that works whatever the weather and season.

If you would rather marry in church, Norrviken recommends Mariakyrkan, Hovs kyrka and Torekovs kyrka. A church ceremony is booked directly with the Church of Sweden parish of Båstad-Östra Karup on +46 431 787 00, and after the ceremony you can arrive at Norrviken from 17.00.

Dinner and the party take place in Orangeriet, the restaurant in Villa Abelin, which can be set for up to 200 guests. Suppliers have access to Orangeriet from 15.00 to prepare, and the party must end by 02.00. Outside food and drink are not allowed, since the restaurant holds a licence to serve alcohol. On the upper floor of the villa are two wedding suites named Hild and Dagmar after the Abelin daughters, and breakfast is served in Villa Abelin. The villa also has dressing rooms with mirrors and a clothes rail, available from 9.00 to 17.00 on the wedding day. You are welcome to bring your own hairstylist and makeup artist.

One thing worth knowing early: Norrviken is first and foremost an open garden. A booking does not reserve the whole park for you, and members of the public or other events may be there on the same day. Plan the portraits with that in mind and ask Norrviken what is happening in the park on your date.

A photographer perspective

As a photographer, Norrviken is a dream. Every garden gives you a completely new backdrop. The Japanese Garden has a stillness that shows in the images. The Italian garden, which Norrviken calls the Baroque Garden, has lines and symmetry that make for elegant portraits.

The light on the Bjäre peninsula is also distinctive. Being close to the sea gives it a softness that differs from Stockholm. My tip: hold the ceremony on the Oriental Terrace or in Victoriahuset, where Norrviken offers ceremonies, and take the portraits in the Japanese Garden. That gives you two entirely different visual worlds from the same day.

The garden rooms and what they give your photographs

Abelin set out the formal gardens along a main axis and several cross axes, with Villa Abelin at the centre, and let them flow into more natural areas, according to the Norrviken description of its gardens. For portraits that means straight lines and clipped hedges close to wilder greenery.

The Renaissance Garden is enclosed by dense hornbeam hedges, and inside it clipped box forms patterns that look like embroidery. The Baroque Garden is inspired by Italian garden design, with clipped box, cypresses and a reflecting pond with Villa Abelin as its backdrop. The Japanese Garden lies in a steep ravine where the landscape of Skåne meets East Asian garden design. In the Water Garden, small cascades and ponds run down the slope in front of the white water temple, with Japanese maples and hydrangeas around them. The Romantic Garden is inspired by English landscape parks, with winding paths and rhododendrons that form green tunnels. In the North German Garden, summer flowers are reflected in a pond that seems to merge with the sea.

The Cherry Garden was planted in the 1980s and flowers every spring in pink and white. The gallery above is from a wedding when the rhododendrons were in full bloom and wisteria hung over the pergola. What is flowering in your photographs depends on the month, so a visit at the same time of year as your date shows how the park will look on the day.

Two garden rooms are plenty for the portraits. Every move around the park takes time away from your guests and from dinner, and since the park may have other visitors on the same day, it pays to choose your spots in advance.

Practical details: travel, accommodation and suppliers

Norrviken lies just west of Båstad on the Bjäre peninsula in northwest Skåne. Båstad has a station on the West Coast Line with Öresundståg trains towards Gothenburg and Malmö. Journey times vary by departure, so ask guests to look up their own route. Travel information about the town is available from Visit Båstad.

For guests there are several hotels on the Bjäre peninsula, and Norrviken is happy to help with recommendations and contacts. You book the technical equipment for the ceremony and dinner yourselves, and Norrviken recommends suppliers for that too. They can also put you in touch with florists, photographers, cake makers and entertainment. Serving staff are included in every package and look after dinner and the evening.

For the photo schedule the timings matter. With dressing rooms from 9.00, a park ceremony from 16.30 at the earliest and a party until 02.00, it is a long day, and the portraits can be taken both before the ceremony and between the ceremony and dinner. Agree the timeline with the Norrviken coordinator and your photographer in good time.
