The painting hangs at the Nasjonalmuseet in Oslo today and is one of Norway’s most recognised works of art.

Getting to Lofthus and the logistics
Lofthus sits about 2 hours 40 minutes by car from Bergen and about 5 hours from Oslo. Bergen is the main airport for the area, with direct connections from Stockholm, Copenhagen and the major European cities. From Bergen the road crosses the Hardanger Bridge.
Another option is the train from Oslo to Voss, about 5 hours 20 minutes, and then the bus to Lofthus, about 1 hour 20 minutes. A chartered bus from Bergen airport brings the guests in together. For international guests, Bergen Lufthavn Flesland is the natural arrival point, possibly via transit in Copenhagen or Oslo.
The road from Bergen over the Hardanger Bridge needs no ferry. Guests who choose a route with one of the fjord ferries should check the timetable and build in buffer time on the wedding day.
Accommodation for guests

Several details come up late in planning and can make the weekend better if taken early. Hardanger weather can shift quickly even in summer. Morning may be cool, midday warm, evening windy. Ask guests to bring an extra layer, even if the ceremony is outdoors in July. That goes especially for exposed locations like the islands in the fjord and the terrace after sunset. A thin cashmere shawl or a light blazer saves many evenings in Hardanger and rarely shows in the photographs if the colour matches the dress.
The Folgefonna ice field, Norway’s third largest glacier, sits across the fjord from Lofthus. On clear days it is visible from the hotel garden. Guests who want a boat trip or a glacier excursion can ask the hotel about local operators.
In mid-July the sun rises around 04:30 and sets around 22:45 at Lofthus. The midday light is high and hard, and the softest portrait light comes in the morning and evening. If portraits matter, place the ceremony in the afternoon, after the harshest midday light.

My name is Karin Lundin and I am a wedding photographer based in Stockholm. I photograph weddings as documentary. That means I move quietly through the room, read the energy and capture what happens as it happens.
Hotel Ullensvang has a light that changes hour by hour. Morning is sharp and silver over the fjord. Around midday it goes flat and high. The afternoon softens toward gold, and the evenings in July are long and pink, with the sun slowly dropping behind the mountains. I plan the portrait session around how the light moves. The garden works best in the late afternoon. The orchards work best in the early morning, when the light comes in low through the trees. The fjord works at any time of day, and the evening gives it the softest light.
I work with both colour and black-and-white in the same gallery. Black-and-white works well in Hardanger because the contrasts between water, mountain and stone are strong. Colour carries the apple blossom, the deep blue of the fjord and the green of the slopes. My approach starts with what I choose to see, and I look for the small moments between the planned parts of the day.
